Custom Sei Bass Guitar: The Journey to My Dream Bass

This blog is entirely dedicated to my fantastic new bass built by the master craftsman at The Bass Gallery. Martin and the team have built my dream bass, read about the story here.

Why Get a New Bass?

Prior to getting this bass made, I had been playing the same bass for over 10 years, a Ibanez SR305FM. Now you may have thought this was a bit of a basic bass, however, I had the pickups upgraded to some classic Bartoloni soapbars and the preamp upgraded to a Bartolini HR-3.3AP/918.

So by removing the stock options (which weren’t bad) I still had a very good sounding bass. And because I had been solidly using this as my workhorse for the last 10 years, I knew it inside out. I’d never have to look at the fretboard as I knew exactly where every note was.

Not to mention the experiences I’ve had with it too – sight reading with big bands whilst at school, even taking it to Canada! Playing the Isle of Wight festival and countless functions, where I’m sure lots of characterful scrapes and dents were made, as well as being drenched in booze and sweat 😅

And that’s just the life I had with it! It was bought second hand, so it’s certainly been through a lot, and I’m sure will continue to!

So why get a new bass?? Well, I fancied a more professional looking one, one that had more tone sculpting capabilities, and just one that was that little bit more, special.

The Bass Gallery

So I went to The Bass Gallery. For those who haven’t been or don’t know about it, it’s a shop in Camden entirely dedicated to bass guitars (not a guitar or drum kit in sight 😏) and wow…they have an almighty collection.

So whilst looking for my next bass naturally I asked to play quite a few in the shop. Whilst I played some very nice sounding basses, they all felt alien to me, and a bad thought crossed my mind that if I bought one of these…I’d have to basically relearn the instrument!

So I discussed my dilemma with Martin, and he helpfully suggested that he make me a bass that’s built exactly to my specifications, one that has the same neck thickness as the Ibanez so would feel the same, and it can contain all the other aspects I was looking for. Brilliant! All I had to do was bring my bass in, and he’d accurately measure the precise measurements so It would all feel the same.

We then got to the discussion of scale length, as I was curious about 23-inch 5-string basses (the standard is 24). These are incredibly rare, but luckily they had one in the shop to try out. It was punchy, the 5th string was tight (and not flabby like my Ibanez) and the lower frets were a lot more easily reachable (I have hands the size of a child). So, we decided to go for the 23-inch scale length!

I then also proposed a slightly whacky idea, whereby we could colour code the fretboard to tell users where the notes were, just like on a keyboard. The white notes would be the notes, the black notes would be the accidentals. Here’s a representation fo the idea.

Whilst this would have been a ridiculous inlaying task for Martin and the team, he was prepared to give it a go. However, after showing the design to some people they all said they didn’t like the look of it. And besides, I already knew where the notes were from playing anyway, so I decided not to do it. It would maybe be a great idea for a beginner?

Building Journey

After we got my crazy ideas out of the way and finalised what I wanted, Martin brought me to his workshop (under the store), and we discussed wood. He brought out lots of options and the best part was that I got to pick out the bits of wood I liked most. I went for a spalted maple top, with walnut body wings. The neck would be comprised of maple and walnut to match, with a dark ebony fingerboard. All of these pieces of wood will make up the Flamboyant 5 Sei bass shape.

So I put a deposit down on 28/06/2023 and waited excitedly for progress updates. Now it’s worth pointing out that they only make roughly 10 of these basses every year, plus they run the shop too! So if you are putting in an order, don’t expect it to be finished in a few months. It will take time, and after all, all good things are worth waiting for.

Pickup!

Finally the day came, 06/12/2024 (or 527 days later) when I got my bass, and Martin did apologise for the wait. However, I said to him that you can’t rush a piece of art! I’d much rather they spent the time and attention to detail to make it as best they could. And oh boy did they.

Conclusion

Overall chuffed to bits with it, and it came with a nice spanky new Hiscox case.

Guide to Effects Pedals for Bass Guitar

Effects pedals, although not used too often with bass guitars, can change the timbre of your sound. Effects pedals are quite expensive but also very fun to play around with and can add something unique to your sound. From the sultry growl of overdrive to the otherworldly sweeps of modulation, effects pedals have become an interesting component a bassist can use to define their voice and artistic expression. Let’s explore.

You can get multi-effects units; however, they may not sound as good as individual pedals that are designed specifically for a particular effect. When adding effects on top of other effects, the sound might get quite muddy, and there’s a preferred order to prevent this from happening, though it is really all down to experimentation. You have to think like a producer. This is the preferred order going from first to last.

Dynamic Pedals

There is usually only one pedal in this category, and it is the Compressor. A Compressor automatically reduces the dynamic range (compressing and evening the dynamics). They can make the tone fatter, increase sustain and increase the presence of an instrument in a band setting. Some parameters can be set:

Threshold

Determines at which volume level the sound should reach until it is compressed. Sounds below the level will not be compressed. If you lower the threshold enough, you can turn a Compressor into a Limiter, which is used to filter the highest dynamic peaks.

Ratio

Determines how much compression is applied to the sound that has passed the threshold. Ratio gives you a certain change in output, for a given change in input.

A ratio of 5:1 for example means that the input signal has a change in 5dbs which will result in a change of 1db at the output. Thus reducing the dynamic range.

Attack

Determines how long it takes to apply the compression after sound passes the threshold. The effect can be more subtle with a slower attack.

Release

Determines how long it takes for the compression to stop when the sound falls below the threshold. This is the setting that increases sustain.

Output gain

The overall volume level will be reduced if the ratio was high, and you will have to bring up the output gain so that the sound level returns to its original level.

After capturing the dynamics, we can then add effects on top. When looking at these pedals, you will usually see the parameters’ dry’ and ‘wet.’

Dry

Means how much of the original signal you want blended. Wet – Means how much of the ‘effect’ you want blended.

Envelope Filter/Wah Pedals

Filters adjust the cut off frequencies passing through it and are changed depending on the dynamics of your playing. It is used a lot in Funk!

Overdrive/Distortion/Fuzz Pedals

These effects are quite similar and can sometimes cross territories.

Overdrive

Responds to dynamics of your playing and mimics the sound of a tube amplifier. If you play aggressively, you will get an aggressive overdrive sound, and when you play softly, you will get a less overdriven sound.

Distortion

A clipping device that produces a complex, gritty sound with a lot of enharmonic overtones that are dissonant to your fundamental note, making complex chords sound off.

Fuzz

A more extreme version of distortion and gives the sound quality a more synth-like effect. Think of the MUSE bass tone.

Something to be mindful with these types of effects is that they tend to remove bass frequencies, which isn’t very good if you’re a bass player (Although it worked well for Lemmy!). If the Distortion and Fuzz pedals are turned up high, they will create a lot of ‘noise’, and a noise gate might be required to tame it. Some pedals may even a noise gate built into them, like the Electro-Harmonix Deluxe Bass Big Muff Pi.

Pitch Effects

These pedals focus on the pitch that goes into them and synthesises additional signals along with the ‘wet’ signal.

Octaver

The additional synthesised signal is usually an octave lower to create a synth-like sub-bass effect. The classic is the OC-5, which offers precise tracking and a broad tonal palette, catering to vintage and contemporary octave effects. However, some octave pedals can even synthesise a signal an octave higher to reach into the frequency range of an electric guitar e.g. the Electro Harmonix POG. You can usually change how much dry and wet signal you want, and if you turn the dry off, you get a completely synthesised tone.

Harmoniser

The additional synthesised signal will be interval related, and you have to select a key in which to use it in. You will have to know your musical theory to pull off using this!

Pitch shifter

Combines both elements of the Octaver and Harmoniser, usually used in conjunction with an expression pedal to control the pitch.

Modulation

Modulation means that another signal modifies your signal. (not to be confused with the same word modulation, which uses the word to describe change key.) They all use an LFO which stands for Low-Frequency Oscillator, and they are used to generate a variable waveform.

Phaser

Phase occurs when you have two identical signals, so a copy of your signal is created. However, the copied signal has an all-pass filter applied, where any frequency can be cut/boosted and moved around using a LFO.

Flanger

Your dry signal mixes with a 5-25ms delayed signal, and an LFO is used to adjust the delay times. Sometimes the output can be fed back to the input to create feedback.

Chorus

Your dry signal mixes with a delayed and slightly detuned signal. The LFO adjusts the pitch in the additional signal. The delayed signal is longer than the flange, typically between 20-50ms. This effect was viral in the 80s.

Vibrato

Is similar to chorus but the signal is not copied, and so your dry signal becomes the wet signal. The pitch is variably increased and decreased to achieve the vibrato sound.

Tremolo

The volume is variably increased and decreased to achieve the tremolo sound.

Time-based Effects

These pedals are usually placed last in the chain.

Delay

Records the input signal and plays it back after a set period. Let us get into some parameters:

Time – The time it takes for the repeat to occur after you initially play a note. Feedback – Gives you the number of repeats.
Level – The volume level of the repeats.

Reverb

Reverb occurs when sound hits a surface and reflects to the listener. The listener can get an idea of the physical space through the reverberations. An effects

pedal will simulate these reverberations. This effect isn’t used much with bassists as if used too extreme can muddy the sound. However, when used subtly can fill space. Let’s look at some parameters:

Effect ratio/level – Allows you to mix the dry and wet signals. More ‘dry’ will make the sound seem ‘closer’ and more ‘wet’ will make the sound seem ‘further away.’

Decay – How long it takes until the reverberations are inaudible.
Pre-delay – The time between the dry signal and wet signal. E.g. how far away the surface is from the instrument.

When using a lot of effects/ long cables, your signal strength can be lost. But there are a couple of things that tackle this problem.

Preamp/Buffer

Preamp

If you are to get any bass pedal, you should get this one.

The classic is of course the Tech 21 SansAmp Bass Driver DI V2 Pedal. A game-changer in tonal flexibility, this pedal is perfect for those who crave classic and contemporary sounds. Its versatility is second to none.

The preamp pedal can theoretically be placed anywhere in the chain, however, many (like the SansAmp) has a DI built in. As you’d likely want all of your effects to go through the front of house via the DI (an XLR output sent to the FOH to be heard through the PA speakers and your monitors) the preamp is usually best suited at the end of the chain.

Buffer

Preserves the strength of signal running through the setup and you can just put one on the end of your chain.

Line Selector

This pedal allows you to maintain your dry signal going through, which is estrmeley useful for abss guitar. It has two busses which you can use to stack effects onto and blend with your dry signal. As discussed, you do lose the bottom end if you use a lot of effects, so this is particularly useful when wanting to maintain the essence of the instrument while blending in effects.

The only thing you need to be wary of is phasing, and a way to mitigate this is to use EQ pedals.

The classic line selector is the Boss LS-2, and it works like this:

Other Useful Things to Know!

ABY Pedal

Lets you split a signal in two ways. ‘Y’ is representative of the signal going in. The ‘A’ and ‘B’ are representative of the signals you intend to switch. You could switch between two amplifiers or run both simultaneously, or turn it the other way and switch between two instruments into the same amplifier.

True bypass

If you see this on pedals, then the signal remains intact. This signal remains intact because there is a signal that sends to the amp, which clears the effect circuitry.

Loop switcher

Each effect is plugged into the switcher, and you choose whether to turn them on. So your direct signal can pass through the switcher and pass into specific pedals via stomp switches. This way you’re making the connections when you want and not connected to the pedals all the time.

Power Supplies

You are going to need some way of powering all these pedals if you choose to get some. There is no point getting an expensive pedal if you’re powering it with a cheap power source. Every pedal has a specific power requirement, and you can get a lot of different requirements if you mix different brands. To find out what power requirements are for each pedal, look for the voltage (usually 9V,12V) and also the current (measured in milliamps or ma). It is also recommended to power the pedals with isolated DC outputs to eliminate hum.

Building a Pedal Board

Setting up all these effects is very time consuming and so having a board saves a lot of time when gigging. It also minimises things going wrong especially if you get your inputs and your outputs the wrong way round! My drummers mum always had to remind me which way round they went! And so with these wise words from Michelle: The input is the pathway which connects to the instrument; the output is the pathway that connects to your amplifier!

So my advice is to hook everything up the way you like it and stick them onto a board, so they’re all nicely set up. I used an old piece of kitchen worktop for my first board, so you don’t need it to be made out of an expensive material, just something that works. Although mine was ridiculously heavy and I did change it!

Sticking pedals onto the boards

Most pedals have a rubber bottom, if you choose to use velcro tape to secure the pedals (most boards are) then you should remove this by plying it off and then velcro to the bottom to ensure it sticks on your board properly. Of course, you could use cable ties, but you’re somewhat restricted if you ever need to move any pedals about.

The portability factors can be big, and when we look at the bass hard case it falls short on lots of these things. My bass bag has two handles, shoulder straps and an internal compartment. Whereas the hard case has a very small internal space for storing things and it’s only got one handle. Although hard cases do look cool, I guess as they’re the traditional way of shipping equipment, and you can add stickers that build up your story/journey as a musician, whereas you can’t really add stickers to bass guitar case.

Wrapping It Up: Conclusions on Bass Guitar Bags

Overall, here’s some concluding thoughts. Bass guitar bags are more useful, comfortable, portable and can offer really great protection as long as you don’t go too cheap. I personally recommend a MONO bass case, as it suits my style (after a knackering gig I can throw the bass in its bag and not worry about its protection as it has always been great in a highly packed car) but there are many great cases on the market and it all depends on how expensive your instrument is and how much protection you’d like for it.

I guess one lasting piece of advice, if you have pockets in the front of the bass bag, don’t overfill it as you could break the zippers, or if its really chocker in there, you could actually harm your bass body if anything has sharp edges (I put my bass head in there once, which is probably too heavy and found lots of small dents on my body, and some bent tone knobs!).

So maybe if you want absolute complete protection a hard case is probably best so that it stops you from putting anything else in the case that could damage it! Also they’re made of the most durable materials (hence why they are heavier) and some even include locks to keep it safe and secure.

Also, when packing your car, don’t put the bass at the bottom. Always put it on the top.

The humble strap is often overlooked despite its paramount role in comfort and performance. Picture this: a marathon gig or rehearsal session where your strap begins digging into your shoulder, detracting from your play and stage presence. I’m going to begin with my experience with straps. When I bought my first bass I was told I could pick any strap on the stands, little did I know that not all straps are the same! I picked up a thin electric guitar strap (I liked the cool pattern on it), but I realised over the years that it didn’t offer much padding. This was a mistake! When the day came to buy a new strap (probably after 5 years or so) I bought a nice wide one it was really a nice weight off my shoulders! So my advice is to get a wide one to distribute the weight of a bass guitar, which is typically heavier than a guitar (so a normal guitar strap may not cut it!).

My new Comfort Strapp has foam padding, it’s wide to distribute the weight and it’s elasticated so that the weight is hanging from the strap more, rather than my shoulders. Anyways, let’s help you find your ideal strap!

There’s a lot of bass pickups out there and a lot to consider depending on many factors. Here’s a quick step by step plan to take when considering getting new pickups:

Summary

Not every pickup will fit into every bass type, so you need to research the pickup size for your specific bass model. The placement of these pickups will have just as an effect on the tone as the pickups themselves.
You need to then consider what sound you want to go for. Research manufacturer sound files and basses demonstrating the pickups. You can then use your ears to see what you prefer.
Active or passive pickups?
Then consider the coil type (double coil/single coil/split coil)
Then consider the wiring configuration (series/parallel)

Lets dive into each of these areas in a bit more detail!

What is A Pickup?

The pickups are those black rectangular parts on the body that ‘pick up’ the notes you play transforming it into an electrical signal. More specifically, a pickup consists of magnets and coils of wire. The magnets create a magnetic field that extends above the strings. When the strings, which are typically made of a ferromagnetic material (like steel), vibrate within this magnetic field, they disrupt it. These disruptions or changes in the magnetic field induce an electrical current in the coil of wire, following Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction.

Bass Guitar Pickups Sizes

There are a number of different models of bass, which all have differently sized pickup cavities within them:

Precision Bass (P-Bass) Pickups

The Precision Bass pickup, introduced by Fender in the early 1950s, has a split-coil design that creates a humbucking effect, reducing noise and hum. The P-Bass pickup is characterised by its deep, warm, and punchy tone, making it a favourite among rock and pop players. The standard size for a Precision Bass pickup is approximately 2.25 inches (57.15mm) in width and 1.1 inches (27.94mm) in depth, though these dimensions can vary slightly depending on the manufacturer and specific model.

Jazz Bass (J-Bass) Pickups

Jazz Bass pickups, also introduced by Fender, feature a single-coil design and are known for their bright, clear, and articulate sound, which is versatile enough to suit a wide range of musical styles. Soapbar pickups are often used for their versatility and can house either single-coil or humbucking configurations. Two common sizes for soapbar pickups are the EMG 35 and 40 series, which are popular choices among bass manufacturers. The EMG 35 series typically measures approximately 1.5 inches (38.1mm) in width and 3.5 inches (88.9mm) in length, while the EMG 40 series is slightly larger, with dimensions around 1.5 inches (38.1mm) in width and 4 inches (101.6mm) in length. It’s worth noting that the term “soapbar” can refer to a wide range of sizes beyond just these two, so it’s important to check the specific dimensions when replacing or upgrading pickups.

Picking the perfect bass pickup isn’t merely about choosing the most expensive or advertised.

I’m currently getting a custom-made bass where I’m getting a dual coil pickup at the bridge to compensate for the naturally thin tone at that position, and the option to single coil the neck pickup to help bring a bit more clarity and maintain note definition.

Now then, before we embark on this odyssey through musical history, it’s crucial to grasp what we actually mean by ‘music’. You see, music is more than just an arrangement of notes and melodies; it’s a universal language, a form of expression that transcends borders and time zones. Is it art? Most certainly. Is it science? You could argue that as well.

Scientifically speaking, sound waves are characterised by their frequency, amplitude, and timbre.

Frequency: Determines the pitch of the sound. Higher frequencies result in higher-pitched sounds, and lower frequencies produce lower-pitched sounds.

Amplitude: Defines the loudness or volume of the sound. A greater amplitude will result in a louder sound, while a lower amplitude will produce a softer sound.

Timbre: Also known as the ‘colour’ or ‘quality’ of the sound. It’s what makes different instruments or voices distinct from one another, even if they’re playing or singing the same note at the same volume.

When these elements come together in a structured way, we perceive it as music. Different combinations of pitch, volume, and timbre produce various musical notes and chords, which can then be arranged into melodies, harmonies, and rhythms.

Personally, my favourite definition of music is that it is simply emotion. Emotion from the soul that travels via energetic frequencies and sound waves. The purpose of music (and art) therefore, holds a spiritual/communal aspect, as it intends to generate a response from the spectator (emotional, psychological or physiological), so that they too, can become a participant.

However, when you have to record live instruments and singing, it can be more challenging as you still need the no-how and the right acoustic environment. When it comes to mixing and production quality, this is also extremely important in a saturated market, and being both a sound engineer and a sound mixer requires a lot of technical skill!

From AI-generated compositions to immersive virtual reality concerts, technological advancements could redefine our very understanding of what constitutes ‘music’ and ‘performance.

Discussing about AI music causes many ethical issues and generates a question of authenticity. Music is emotion, will a machine ever be able to effectively replicate that unless sampling a live vocalist? Then there’s the questions:

Who owns an AI-generated song if it’s made by a machine?
Who owns the artist voice? The record label or the artist?
Is it ethical to bring back an artist from the death and recycle their voice?
What happens to musicians if AI music takes off?
Will AI products have to be labelled ‘Made by an AI’

Of course there are positives to AI, it would serve as a useful tool in education and idea generation. However, AI music creation would definitely remove further barriers, and you’ll likely see the music market massively saturated. Imagine how many tracks will get uploaded every day if everyone can create AI music!!

Given the challenges of standing out in a digital marketplace, live performances could regain prominence as artists seek more direct and memorable ways to connect with audiences.
